Football is a game, and being that it’s not supposed to be predictable since anything can happen. But we’re human and people are better than each other, outsmart each other, more experienced than others, some are more skillful and this factor comes to play in the game which make some the favorites to win in a game.
And when looking at two teams we most time pick the better side because of their records, caliber of players they’ve got and many other things like the ones mentioned above.
In this post we’d be sharing with you some shocking defeats that were far from being predicted by any fan even though sometimes we might have predicted the winner, the scorelines still came to us as a shock.
Below are 5 most shocking football defeats and score lines that caught us unawares;
Bayern Munich vs FC Barcelona(8-2), 14th Aug 2020 :
The match was played away from home for both teams due to the COVID-19 pandemic at the time, so it was on a neutral ground in Lisbon.
Goals came from Thomas Muller who scored 2, Ivan Persic who was on loan from Inter Milan, Sergi Gnabry, Kimmich, Lewandoski, and Phillipe Coutinho who was on loan from FC Barcelona and scored 2 goals coming in as a substitute. Some would have predicted the match because of Bayern’s fine form that season, but no one would have expected a scoreline that wide.
FC Barcelona at that moment had Lionel Messi who is arguably the greatest player of all time, Luis Suarez who could be easily called the best striker of the 21st century, Jordi Alba, Pique, Sergio Busquets were all experienced players and no one saw the defeat coming in anyway.
Another thing that made the scorelines unimaginable is the fact that Bayern only manage to score 4 in each match they played against Chelsea before qualifying to play against FC Barcelona. How could Barcelona concede as much in a single match?
Another disastrous event that happened that night was Coutinho scoring two scores and assisting one despite being loaned out by FC Barcelona earlier that season for not being good enough.
Manchester United vs Liverpool FC (0-5), 24th Oct 2021:
This definitely came as a surprise to us too, we couldn’t have predicted the scorelines before the match but it happened.
Mohamed Salah was probably in his finest form in recent years banging a hattrick and winning an assist in that match.
Other goals came from Keïta and Diego Jota.
Manchester United were obviously struggling, signing top notch players but having problems make them fit in the same team, they’ve just suffered a shocking 4-2 defeat against Leicester 2 matches before.
But that wasn’t really an excuse, they had just managed to pull a comeback against Atlanta in the UCL coming from 2 goals behind.
The fact that Manchester United had Cristiano Ronaldo who could pull the impossible at any moment intensify the shock suffered by football fans. Well he did pull one though, kicking Curtis Jones out of frustration in the final minutes of the match and ended up getting booked for it.(laughs)
And the most distressing part of this is that all these happened at home in Old Trafford for Manchester United, a really bad day for the red devils.
