Nigeria beat South Africa 1-1 (5-3 on penalties) to qualify for the Final of AFCON 2023. The Super Eagles stand a chance to win their fourth trophy.

Nigeria have won six penalty shootouts at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations, the joint-highest tally in the competition’s history alongside Egypt. The Super Eagles will play their 8th AFCON final, only Egypt (9) and Ghana (9) have played more of them.

South Africa are played their fourth semi-final at the Africa Cup of Nations and their first since 2000 when they were also eliminated by today’s opponents Nigeria (2-0).

Nigeria played in a record 15th semi-final at the Africa Cup of Nations, they’re now in the final for the first time since 2013, when they won the competition in South Africa.

Kelechi Iheanacho didn’t play a single minute of Nigeria’s opening five AFCON matches, he came against South Africa and played just 18 minutes, yet managed:

Côte d’Ivoire have become the first host nation to reach the CAF Africa Cup of Nations final since Egypt in 2006. This will be the fourth final for the Elephants at the AFCON in the 21st century.

Cote d’Ivoire beat DR Congo 1-0 to qualify for the Final of AFCON 2023. This is DR Congo’s first loss at AFCON 2023.

Cote d’Ivoire have only won two games in regular time at this edition. They lost two games in the group stage, and narrowly qualified as a Third Best Place team.

Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams had both kept four consecutive clean sheets heading into this semi-final. The only way to beat them was from the spot.
