On Thursday, Australia will play Nigeria without their star striker Sam Kerr. The day before their first game, Kerr injured his calf during practice and was forced to miss at least the first two games. Without her, the offense found it difficult to create regular chances against Ireland in that game, and the market has unmistakably devalued them as a result of the performance.
Nigeria should be commended for their strong defensive effort against Canada, which appears better in hindsight after witnessing the Canadians get a few high caliber opportunities against Ireland. Whether they can repeat the feat and score another point in this group will determine how much of a factor they are on the final day. Nigeria made 19 effective tackles in its opening game, demonstrating a true area of strength for the team.
